People In Music History
Sibelius, Jean [Johan Julian Christian] (1865-1957) Finnish composer who
studied in Berlin and Vienna. Because of a Finnish government grant, he was
able to give up teaching and concentrate on composing from 1897. Much of his
work has Finnish "national" associations, sometimes relating to the Kalevala
(Finnish national epic poem), e.g., A Saga, Karelia (overture and suite), The
Swan of Tuonela, Lemmin-KAinen's Homecoming, Finlandia, Pohjola's Daughter,
Tapiola. After the last-named work, first performed in 1926, he published
almost nothing. Of his 7 symphonies, the last is in one movement only. Other
works include violin concerto; small orchestral pieces, including Valse triste;
an unpublished opera; many songs in Finnish and Swedish; incidental music to A.
Paul's King Christian II, Maeterlinck's Pelleas and Melisande, H. Procope's
Belshazzar's Feast, Shakespeare's The Tempest, and other plays.
